Jean Wnukowski Conley was born in Philadelphia and is one of nine children. “Slugsly” is her first children’s book. She received an Associate’s Degree from Penn State University and spent 16 years as a teacher for the Bucks County Head Start program , where her students inspired her to create poems, songs, and characters as learning tools. Jean has two daughters, Marie and Christine, and a grandson, Carter. She resides in Lititz, PA with her husband Chuck, and a brilliant rescue dog, Trooper.
Jean’s Teaching Philosophy:
“Head Start children come from diverse cultural and ethnical backgrounds, but one thing they have in common is joy in learning through music, art, and laughter; I used songs, poems, and a crazy cast of puppets to teach numbers, letters, and colors.I focused on helping kids build self-esteem and self-awareness, and encouraging them to be proud of who they were and respecting others for who they are.” I hope that “Slugsly” will help children learn this; to be content with who they are or, as Slugsly slimes at the end of the book,BE YOU.”
(I’d like to thank Cherie Dussinger for suggesting I add that to the end of the book. I think it is so much better than “The End,” because, it really is a beginning, isn’t it?)
